Just another ghost estate – Callan, co Kilkenny

Ireland Ghost estates

Yesterdays Lunch time walk was a little more attractive than today’s, at some point however I wanted to post about Ireland’s and Kilkenny’s ghost estates.

The country as a whole feels like its gone through the worst of the last years since 2007, however when you take a walk around these local ghost estates you may not think so.

I took the below photograph during the building of this new estate in Callan, during July 2007.

Ghost estate today 13

The Callan housing estate in these pictures was the last to be built in 2007, other estates in the town being built between around 2004 and 2008. None of the houses in this estate ever sold and I heard recently that the council are about to order its demolition.

The entire area around the estate is covered in broken glass, yet there is nothing to stops any Adult, child or dog walking around this location….

During the Summer last year, I was lucky enough to be walking up Slievenamon, county Tipperary while some Para-glider’s were taking off from the side of the mountain. I spent a good long time with these people and got some great photos during the afternoon, here are just two of the many I got….

An afternoon walk, Burnchurch County Kilkenny

The towns-lands of Burnchurch, county kilkenny offer one on the most wonderful landscapes in county Kilkenny. The National ploughing match was held here some years back along with national sheep trials. I helped in submitting images for both events.

I took a couple of hours off this afternoon to walk Molly our Golden retriever and take some landscape photographs for my blog and website this time.

This old gray tractor – Gallery images.

This old tractor 5

One day while walking we came across this little Gray tractor in the Lake District National Park, it was just sitting outside an old farmhouse that had also been converted into a tea shop. We had to stop and take in something to eat and to look at views along with this little Gray Tractor.

I was also able to have a good look around the farm and got some wonderful still life shots that I will post at some point but for now here is a gallery of images I took of this little old tractor.

I Just loved the oil and grim and the look of this old engine, of course the photos cannot get across the smells and the sounds this engine created….

I have a friend, a friend in word & a friend indeed.
A friend who loves me with all friends being & I love friend too.
My friend rejuvenates me
A friend of my youth,
A friend indeed!

My friend is good to me
A friend indeed!

When my friend is gone, I miss my friend already
But my friend has gone home because I am home for now
But the truth is our home is in our friendship.
I have a friend, a friend indeed!

My friend in word is my friend indeed and my friend in need.
Friendship is all we need & we have.

Irish Boglands and Peatlands

Sam Mateer

Back In 2004 I attended an art exhibition held in our local friary hall. The exhibition titled Currents was being shown in many locations in the republic of Ireland and The North of Ireland during that year. I was taken by many of the artists ( I will come back to some of them in future posts) but for me one stood out above the others, this being Sam Mateer and his paintings of the Irish Bog-lands.

Over the last few years I have visited and photographed these areas of the country and aim to continue doing so.

Since the start of the year I have also been considering returning to some landscape painting and drawing, so what better subject areas can you find that these unique and magical places.

The set of images below are just some of the many photographs I have taken in order to start to get to grips of this project.

Reclaiming found things

Well, well – Hello! I didn’t even know you were still around….

Going through some old box’s of things from the old loft last week I found this camera and it must be one of the first SLR Camera’s I ever owned. Back in 1985, I moved from Altrincham near Manchester to live and work for Chase Manhattan bank as an IBM programmer.

Rayners Lane I Purchased this Pentax Super A from the shop across the road from the flat I rented. You can just about make out the shop in this photograph (Image photography) which by the way is the first frame from the first roll of film I ever used in this Camera.

I don’t remember at which point I didn’t use this Pentax any more, I think it is when I started getting into Nikon Cameras with an FM2n body which I thought was my first SLR film camera.

I just love finding old things and believe me I will use this camera again now its re-found. I am attempting to get some processing chemicals to do a post on black and white negative processing, the shop I was hoping to get it from however let me down so I am having to get it imported from Birmingham in the UK.

Here are some Sample images that I took first time around with this Pentax Super A.

Depth, in the flower bed

These two images are another example of using lens depth of field to good effect using a wonderful flower bed on our local river bank. The first image is using F8 and the Second image is using F1.8 as a lens aperture setting.

This afternoon has turned into a wonderful day :), the weather here in Ireland has gone from spring to almost summer like in one week and everything is coming to life. I went out with Molly our Golden retriever after lunch for a walk along the river bank and there are flowers coming out every step you take.

As always I had a camera with me and took lots of images, its always fun with flower beds to play with lens depth of field and the panel of images below shows the effects of Lens apertures f8 upto f1.8 on image depth.

These images were taken during a visit to the Lake district boat museum some years back, I have been scanning a lot of my old films and came across these as part of a set that I will use in full at some point, For the moment however these two images show one of histories great boats used to set world water speed records….

Irish clean water standards – ( EPA 2012 )

Water droplets

In May 2012 I received a call from the Irish EPA in Cork, they were looking for some images in order to help finish the publication of some brochures, before the launch of new European clean water standards.

In the end I got both the front cover and many of the internal images, these are just some of the work submitted, this project was a great chance to publish some of my landscape photography.

I also completed the design of the from cover as below….

When we first came to live in Kilkenny back in 2003, we lived right next to these old church ruins at coolagh county kilkenny. Early each morning I would walk our then 6 month old golden retriever puppy, molly into the fields and up-to this spring below the tree.

These old church remains date back from around (1171-72) being constructed by the Anglo-Normans. The old church on coolaghmore hill, was replaced with a new church in about 1880. These old remains of the original church have stood unused ever since.

Morning meditation

I find nothing to fill the emptiness,
Of a very cold grey moment
In the endless time of my waking up attempts,
When feeling is painful and the morning is fogged,
Time comes and goes as I try to understand,
Understanding becomes big, huge as a true thing can be,
Truth is relative they say,
Points of view and ways to see,
Interacting is so self defined,
Perceptions float when empty seems deathlike,
Silence in and out is not necessarily peace,
Nothing is rational in a sleepy fogged mind,
But the sun has no fault for this,
So,
I decide to get up from my warm bed,
In a fogged, cold, grey and empty morning,
Carry on my sleepy, fogged mind,
With the conviction this certainly is a different day.
