I intend to post a more detailed article about Jerpoint abbey soon, however here I just want to post some Images that I hope give you a feeling for this wonderful Cistercian abbey founded in the second half of the 12th century. The abbey is located near Thomastown, county Kilkenny.

A sense of place, Dunkineely, county Donegal
A little time back we stayed in a small cottage just above the beach at Bruckless, County Donegal, for a couple of weeks. For many county Donegal is one of the most scenic locations in Ireland and this location was a really peaceful and Beautiful place.
Even though this is a very remote area, it has plenty of things going on and has lots of things to see, from Old castles to lighthouses, wind farms too fishing villages and pub with live music.
I very much hope that the images I am posting here get across a sense of this location, It’s a wonderful spot to stay and one of the best holiday you could spend in Ireland.

Out on the lakes of Killarney, Autumn time and colours
Autumn time in Ireland is a wonderful time to be a photographer or an artist, the landscape comes alive with colour.
There are many locations to be captured but one place I always think of at this time of year is the lakes at Killarney. It is possible to do boat trips around the lakes here almost all year around and hiring a small boat is great fun.
These images were taken last October time, most are taken from the boat you can see in the first image with some taken on parts of the banks of the lake that would just not reachable with out use of this boats.
It’s great fun to do something like this packing an lunch, loading a camera and tripod in to the boat and just heading off for the day.

Sunday evening at Derriana lake
One Sunday evening during the summer, while visiting Derriana lake, county Kerry, we went for a walk along the local lanes.
We came across this old red tractor resting in a field above the lake, I felt this view reflected Sunday evenings very well.
A tractor, rested during the weekend, but ready to start all over again on Monday morning.

A September morning walk along the river Suir brings some wonderfull views.
A light mist is lifting from the water and out of it are visible two of the much locally loved fishing boats, it getting to the time of year when they will be lifted out of the water and repainted but for now they still rest, slowly moving in the rivers flow.

Alone Looking At The Mountain

The Comeragh mountains are located in the north west of county Waterford, Ireland, resting above the river Suir as it flows through county Tipperary.
I visit these mountain many times during the year and no day is ever the same, this place can be wonderful in the Summer and wild and unfriendly in the winter months. Ireland is not know for much snow fall, yet at least once a year these mountains will be covered in fresh snow.
This is a very special place, one I love to visit.
These Images are taken during the summer months on a walk upto Knocknaree ridge, which offers some stunning views of county Waterford and on a good day it’s coast line.

I was up early in the morning and went for a walk on Boats strand, county Waterford.
A mist hung over the Celtic Sea and over the land and cliffs, it was just wonderful, I took lots of images and wanted to share some of them here.

The Raven Nature Reserve and Curracloe beach
located at Raven Point on the north side of Wexford ( Loch Garman) Harbour, Co. Wexford.
Raven Point is a spit, a type of peninsula created by deposited sand. It is a portion of an area consisting of a series of sand dunes known as the North Slob with views of the Irish sea and the harbour.
The Reserve is located beside Curracloe beach, best known for having featured in the Second World War themed motion picture ‘Saving Private Ryan.’
Raven Point is planted with a forest of pine and other evergreen trees. It is also a sanctuary for birds such as geese and wildlife especially the red squirrel. Seals can also be seen on the beaches and in Wexford Harbour.
A looped walk of the area goes to the tip of the Raven Point spit through the wood and back again via the beach.
It’s a wonderful place to visit for a day and offers long walks and one of Ireland best white sandy beaches.

The Ballykeeffe Amphitheatre is Kilkenny’s outdoor auditorium and it is used many times during the year for outdoor performances. Located beneath Ballykeeffe Woods and Nature Reserve, I have visited this area many times to walk our dog and get some exercise.
The Amphitheatre was build in the remains of an old slate quarry, for a longtime the performances were held in the open air but very recently it boasts a state of the art canopy which fits within the worked-out quarry.
The acoustics and setting are designed to provide for a great outdoor theatre and music performance.
When the new canopy first appeared, I took the following images.

Sundays at this time of year can be a great time to go for a river walk, its getting towards autumn but the walk along the river Nore towards St Mullins can still be green and full of life.
There were still lots of people around, including one family rowing in their Canadian Canoes, I got some images of them and we met them again later on outside a Cafe and shared a drink or two.

Going down to Littleton bog, County Tipperary

Going down to Littleton Bog.
To myself I feel that very little depicts the landscape of Ireland as much as it’s peat bog areas, peat has been cut from this landscape for hundreds if not thousands of years.
Littleton Bog is about 30km from my home and I visit this area many times during the year, too both walk our dog Molly and take sometime too take images and just be out in what can be a very wild place in the winter months along with a wonderful place in the summer.
The mass production of peat from the Littleton area has left this landscape deeply affected as you can see from this photo and the photographs below. However I have also tried by best to show how the area around the bog can be reclaimed for both nature and wildlife.
Many Animals and Birds make the reclaimed lakes here their home during both the winter and summer months. Littleton bog is also home to many rare plants and insects with multiple entries in the Irish national biodiversity database.

Last week the Irish Poet Seamus Heaney died and he wrote this Poem about the Irish bog lands.

How Is a Corrie Formed?
Answer
A corrie is formed in different steps. First, the snow accumulates in a hillside hollow and turns to ice. Then, the hollow is deepened by abrasion and plucking and the ice in the corrie moves under the influence of gravity, deepening the hollow still further. Since the ice is at the foot of the hollow and moves more slowly, a rock lip forms. When the ice melts, a lake or tarn may be formed in the corrie. The steep back wall may be severely weathered by freeze€“thaw weathering, providing material for further abrasion.

Valentia Island, county Kerry is located just west of Cahersiveen, and accessed by bridge from Portmagee or by ferry at Renards point. It is the location of the first communications cable to cross between the USA and Europe back in the 1800’s.
The Lighthouse has been restored and is now open to visitors and it is well worth doing so, I took this photo on a recent trip, just as a boat passed us, between Valentia and Beginish Islands.

Some weeks back I first noticed the images of Sharon K and her blog Sunearthsky , Sharon’s second post was called urban sentries and I loved this image a lot, the locations of old disused factories and industrial sites I find a geat subject for photographic imagery.
Its taken sometime for me here in county Kilkenny, without going looking just for this subject matter to find a location that matches. About two weeks ago however I came across this old quarry along the banks of the river Barrow. Its of a large scale consisting of both the quarry area and the building used to crush the stone and store it, It looks like all the stone was used to make blocks or for use in concrete or on the roads.
The following images are a Gallery that I hope gets across a sense of this place and I hope Sharon likes them as Much as I liked hers.

I watched the ripples, as I drifted away
the lake was deep, on this golden day
Lured by reflection, in this tranquil deep
I lost my mind, then I fell asleep
Trees were talking, murmured rustling leaves
sunlight glistened, on catkin weaves
Dragonflies, and fish that spawn
could not awake me, from this dawn
.
I floated far and I drifted near
there was no time, as was not fear
Taken away, on this autumn noon
stars were shining, behind the moon
When crickets struck their evening call

Allihies, west cork, offers one of Ireland’s most remote and stunning Landscapes, This shot was taken on a visit Last year.
The old Cloan, copper mining road out of the town gives some stunning landscape views of the area below
It also passes the old copper mines in the hills above the town.

One reason I truly love monochrome images is for the contrast range that can be achieved, no where is this more possible than when attaching an IR720 filter on to a lens.
This filter only lets in Infra-red light and excludes any other light wavelength, Thus anything that is emitting IR light will be recorded in light tones and any other area of the image will appear dark a deep, deep black.
It is this very high contrast that is so hard to achieve in photography, without post processing software. Using an IR720 filter however can produce this effect in images right out of the camera and they just look wonderful.
You do have some issues to over come however, you need to pre-focus and lock the focus before attaching the filter to the lens. You need long exposures and you need to experiment with the correct selection of setting for this by taking many shots as you will not truly be able to see the results until you get home.
You can get a camera completely converted to Infra-red, but this is expensive and may not always work i.e. the focusing system fails to work and some sensors produce better results than others.
