The Castletownbere to Bere Island ferry, west Cork
Landscape Photography : Nigel Borrington
One summers afternoon on a visit to Castletownbere, I sat down on a bench at the quay’s and took some images of the ferry arriving from Bere island. West Cork has many small Islands but not all are serviced so well by ferries like this one.
I have lived in different locations during my life and lived with different methods of transport (Cars, A Bus, trains, motorcycles, cycles) but never a ferry, it must be an amazing things to live your life using one each and everyday to get home. The passengers on the ferry during the day were people getting to work, shopping, school kids and holiday makers.
Both locations well work a visit.

These are great summer images, Nigel :-). I love ferries, such fun to drive onto a giant boat and float across the water. The white cross on the mountain in the first shot is a little photo bonus :-).

Hello Sharon π
Thank you for your comment !
Yes I think that moment when you hear the clunk of the ramp as you drive on and off you head is just brilliant.
I Love getting out and looking over the side as you sail of away from the land! π

Excellent captures, Nigel. Sounds like a great day, watching the boats come and go, the sounds and smell of the water, and the birds.

Ah, living life on ferry time. BC Coast has several communities that depend on ferry service and people work around their schedule. They live in beautiful surroundings – and the ferry adds a feeling of distance from “civilization” which adds to the peace and solitude.

Great photos and I think it must be a wonderful way to go to work each day (except in winter of course).
I can think of no better way to spend a day – sitting on the quay watching boats coming and going, coastal birds in the skies and the tangy smell of the sea in your nostrils. Lunch should be fish & hot chips of course (straight out of the newspaper wrapping we used to get them in when we were children). Nowadays seaside fish & chip shops seem to have boxes and fancy containers).
