A Winters day on the farm …..

Winters on a farm are a hard time of year, dealing with the weather and the cold, the dark evenings and early mornings. Life as a farmer must have many great moments but its not hard to imagine that there are less of these in the winter months than in the summer.

I took these images while out on a walk yesterday and as you can see, on this farm some of the cows are still out in the fields while some have been returned to their winter shed, soon all of them with be inside. In the Barn close by is stored some of the feed that will be used for the cattle over the next few months. In an area of the barn next to the feed is the farmers haybob that would have been used only a few weeks back to help get the hay bales ready.

The next few weeks are all about rest for the land and keeping the live stock warm and health in the sheds, life slows down and less work out in the fields is needed. While welcome in some ways you can imagine that this lack of activity can at times feel a little to slow but this is farm life.

Here in county Kilkenny each year you develop a great sense of the farming seasons and the activities that go along with them.

In my Mothers Kitchen

In the old Kitchen

Poem by : Susan Lower

My mother’s kitchen was worn with age.
In the old farm house,
where we lived and played.

She kept it nice and tidy.
The glasses always washed.
Not a plate out of place.

On the old red linoleum floors.
I did roller skate.

I learned to bake a cake.
Without a book, without any taste.

There I watched from the window,
my sisters kiss their dates.

My mother’s kitchen held a telephone.
Where my sisters stretched the cord,
and hid behind the next door.

Inside the wall of this place.
Comfort grew without the frills of lace.
Never were we late
when Mother called us in from the barn.

My mother’s kitchen is where I knew she’d be.
When I came racing home from school.
She always stood waiting for me.

Just back from a brilliant weekend on the farm in Tipperary, I love it at the farm you get true downtime helping out and just walking among the fresh wheat fields….

This Morning is one of our last mornings for a while that we are looking after our friends farm while they are away, So I thought I would share the experience of feeding their Muscovy ducks( Thank you seeingspotsphoto ).

They sleep the night in a home made hut to keep out any interested foxes that may wonder into the field, the hut is just lovely and the work that going into both building it and keeping it looking so rustic is wonderful.

The six of them eat wet meal feed served into a dish from a bucket filled with water and soaked overnight, its just brilliant to watch them in the morning finding a place to feed from.

This time helping look after the chickens, geese and horses has just been brilliant!

Good Morning Chicken !

Letting out the chickens

I posted earlier in the week about the fact that every now and then we look after a friends farm house while they go on holiday. One of the biggest Jobs is putting the chickens away in the evening, having to collect up everyone of them and shut them in for the night is Great fun!!!

Well we had great fun last night as the head count was a little low, we searched for about 20 minutes until we found her around the back of the sheds hiding as if she knew very well it was the last place we would look.

She was put in for the night and still there this Morning Few!!!

This job is balanced very well though when the next morning you have to let them out and give them some feed, they look very pleased to be set free for the day!
